!!! ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES !!!

Tools should be used carefully and according to their intended purpose, avoiding excessive force, twisting, or overheating.

  • Striking tools are made of hardened steel, which can shatter if used incorrectly. Always wear safety goggles!
  • Cool the tool frequently during use with cooling paste. A coloring on the steel indicates insufficient cooling.
  • Striking tools should always be struck straight and in the center, so the impact is directed from the center of the striking head to the center of the blade. Twisting or an impact that transfers to the hand indicates an indirect strike. This can break the tool’s handle or tip.
  • There should always be material being worked on between the tool and the anvil. Striking the tool directly against the anvil will lead to tool breakage. The temperature of the steel being worked on should surpass 600ยฐC (slight red or brighter) but should not exceed 900ยฐC (orange or brighter). The steel’s color should be from slight red to orange red.
  • Tools should be maintained regularly to keep them intact and usable.
  • Tools should always be inspected and maintained between uses.
  • For striking tools, check for cracks and ensure the handle is securely attached.
  • Burrs, deformations, and rounding of the edges on tools should be corrected by grinding evenly from all sides of the tool’s blade (including the tip). At the same time, compare the tool’s tip to the desired nail and grind accordingly. While grinding the tool should be cooled frequently (when the tool is too hot to handle with bare hands, cool it). For tools with handles, the handle can be removed to facilitate grinding.
  • H13 steels should NOT be adjusted by forging. They should only be adjusted by grinding. H13 steels are notoriously difficult to heat treat without proper equipment (tempering at 500-600C). Adjusting the tools with forge will void all warranty. All of our tools are made with H13 steel.
  • Tools with handles should be soaked at least once a week. Submerge the tool in water so that the tool part is completely underwater and keep it there for at least 12 hours.
